16 MARCH 2017 F E A T U R E A R T I C L E Embrace the agility of today's work ecosystem by Christopher Kelly by Christopher Kelly A s with industries like print publication, taxi, and music distribution, corporate real estate (CRE) is experiencing radical transformation. Much like the effi cient, on-demand, consumer-oriented business models in other industries, the workplace is becoming a service. So what is causing the latest paradigm shift? From our vantage point, there are three disruption drivers in CRE. First, there's the type of work itself. Work-life balance is being replaced by work-life integration in which our work and life play out in parallel. Employees are looking for a new style of work to offset compromises made in their personal lives. The second driver is the real estate model. Rather than taking on entire buildings or fl oors with decade-long leases, businesses are seeking more fl exibility in their offi ce footprint. In the U.S. alone, the fl exible workspace market has grown by more than 10 percent 1 in the past year, even in mature real estate markets.
