52 SEPTEMBER 2017 T h E l E ad ER How long have you been with Humana? And how long have you been in corpo- rate real estate (CRE)? I've been in my role for a little over two years and currently live in Louisville, Kentucky. I lead the Workplace Solutions organization. We are responsible for the traditional corporate real estate functions: transactions, space planning, relationship management, construction manage- ment, facilities management, lease administra- tion, and so on. But I also have responsibility for other functions that corporate real estate is not always responsible for, like corporate aviation, audio-visual capabilities, mail operations, print, fitness centers, and sustainability. Prior to joining Humana, I was in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I worked for about a decade at large global real estate firm and had a number of roles there. Most of that time I was in the project-management space and leading large teams. I also worked with the national transition team and was responsible for transitioning new clients to their platforms and technology. My last role before joining Humana was as a regional director overseeing about 12 million square feet (1.1 million sq. m.) of real estate in the Midwest and Canada for a large financial institution. Before that, I worked for a telecom company in Atlanta for two and a half years in a variety of roles including strategy, call-center manage- ment, marketing, and product development. Prior to that, I was in business school full time at UNC Chapel Hill and received an MBA. Before attending business school, I worked for an Douglas Edwards Vice President of Workplace Solutions Humana energy company in Houston as an engineer. My undergraduate degree was in civil engineering from NC State University. What do you see as your biggest accom- plishment? I'd say it is probably the recent experience I've had here at Humana. When I took this role, our internal reputation and customer satisfac- tion levels were low. We weren't always seen in high regard, and I think a lot of people would say that they weren't satisfied with the outcomes they were getting from Workplace Solutions. I am happy to say that, while we're not perfect, there has been a tremendous turnaround in our customer satisfaction levels. In fact, our customer satisfaction has increased almost 40 percent compared to just two years ago. I feel good about that and it's been a total team effort in improving our relationships with all of our stakeholders across the enterprise. It's been great to be a part of rallying the team around a goal and a worthwhile cause that we can all get behind and go on this journey together. Getting the "people piece" of it right and getting the right people thinking the right way was very important in the turnaround effort. What's one of your favorite quotes? I have two. "A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination," from Nelson Mandela, and, "Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven," from Luke 6:37. What is the last book you read? "Strategize to Win," by Carla A. Harris. It's a book about managing your career. Many of the things in the book I knew already; however, it was a good reminder and placed many of the themes I know into a framework that made a lot of sense. People would be surprised to know that you. . . One of my biggest hobbies is photography. I love taking pictures. I have a website with some of my photography, and I had a small gallery for a short period of time. I also collect bonsai trees – they're really interesting plants to keep and maintain. I'm very committed to the community I live in, and I serve in the non-profit and civic space on a number of boards where I have pas- sion around the causes they are trying to achieve. It's in my DNA to be a good citizen of the com- munity, both in Louisville where I live now and when I lived in Charlotte. I want to make sure I am doing my part. What was the best advice you ever received? As a leader, you have to remember it's not about you. You have to lead in a selfless way, taking yourself out of the equation. You can't lead from the perspective of what's in it for you. You have to lead from the perspective of what's in it for the team and the enterprise and the customer. It's about approaching leadership from a service mentality. If not in CRE, what would you be? It would be one of two things. One, a pho- tographer for National Geographic, traveling the world and visiting different countries, or a CEO or executive director of a non-profit that I'm extremely passionate about. What is your favorite pastime? It's spending time with my family, and travel- ing. Not business travel; that doesn't count. I like leisure/adventure traveling and getting a chance to explore other cultures and talking with people outside the United States. What do you want your legacy to be? That I left things better than the way I found them. Tell us about your family. I've been married for almost five years to my best friend. Our daughter is 11 months old and is starting to talk. Just when I thought I would be able to keep her out of things, I can't because she's a very efficient crawler and looks ready to walk any day now!
