54 SEPTEMBER 2017 T h E l E ad ER The 'C' In 'CRE' stands for collaborative: One Toyota team approach by Lindsay Wilson and Myra Chung T he 2.1-million-square-foot (195,100-sq.-m.), seven-building, state-of-the- art campus in Plano, Texas, is the embodiment of an idea known as One Toyota. This vision was born in late 2013, following a pivotal conversation between Akio Toyoda, the Japanese automaker's global president, and Jim Lentz, the North American CEO. The concept was not only about uniting the separate entities into one location, but also reorganizing a large part of the North American operations in a place that would connect them and enable long-term sustainability and innovation for years to come. On May 15, 2017, the first Toyota team members moved into their new North American Headquarters. To understand how the team conceived, programmed, designed and built the connected vision in less than three years, you have to understand the culture of Toyota. It's a culture deeply rooted in the company's founding principles of respect for others and continuous improvement. The speed of a project this complex could not have been sustained without respecting and embracing a collaborative, flexible, team-based approach. Let's do this, but where? Toyota enlisted the help of global commercial real estate firm, JLL, who, alongside a team of Toyota leaders, conducted a top-secret evaluation of multiple U.S. cities. The selected location was a 100-acre (40-hectare) greenfield site in Plano, Texas. In April of 2014, the announcement was made that this site would be the new home for Toyota Motor North America, a consolidation of headquarters operations previously located in California, Kentucky and New York City. The Los Angeles Times quoted Jim Lentz, who said, "This is the most significant change we've made to our North American operations in the past 50 years." F E A T U R E A R T I C L E
