Company exemplifies outdoor by Lara Hermanson O n a warm, breezy summer morning on Bay Farm Island in Alameda, California, Farmer Lucas Murillo is on a mission to destroy cucumber beetles. These cunning predators are lurking in his cucurbits and damaging his carefully tended produce. Next up is picking a never-ending yellow and green bean harvest, clipping basil tops, and chopping zucchini and pattypan squash from the vine. After cleaning and organizing his harvest, he'll bring it directly into the client's kitchen next door, where the café team will prepare it for lunch that day. Organic farmer Murillo (above) is an employee of Farmscape, the largest urban-farming company in California. His mission, and that of the client's, is to bring fresh, organic and pesticide-free produce and seasonal beauty into cities and corporate campuses. This particular garden is at the headquarters campus of VF Outdoor Inc., parent company of The North Face, Timberland, JanSport, Smartwool and several other VF Corp. brands. The campus sports a four-building plan by FME Architecture + Design and includes five, two-story office buildings housing offices and, among other amenities, an employee fitness center, conference facilities – and a café. In addition to the garden tended by Murillo, the VF Outdoor 14-acre (5.6-hectare) campus also features several sustainability attributes. There is a solar system shading in the parking lot, walking trails on the estuary, and drought-tolerant, native plant landscaping. The campus landscaping was designed by April Philips of April Philips Design Works in San Rafael. According to her website, the vision was for a "highly sustainable, LEED Platinum campus integrated within the company's global environmental goals that include exploration and stewardship of the earth." 20 DECEMBER 2017 th E l E a DER F E A T U R E A R T I C L E
